  • Preparation time: 45 minutes

  • Total time: 1.5 hours

Ingredients:

For the crust:

For the filling:

For the crumble topping:

For the brown sugar glaze:

Recipe:

For the crust:

  1. Freeze unsalted butter for 10+ mins.

  2. While butter is chilling, begin crust preparation. In a large mixing bowl, use a fork to combine flour and salt.

  3. Remove butter from freezer and chop into small cubes. Use a fork (& your fingers) to incorporate the butter cubes into the flour mixture until it resembles course crumbs.

  4. Using a fork, slowly add 4-6 Tbsp cold water to mixture until just moistened. You may not need all 6 Tbsp!

  5. Once the dough has come together: shape the dough into a ball, slightly flatten it, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Store in the refrigerator until ready to use.

  6. No need to pre-bake the crust! We will only bake once the full pie is assembled.

*You can also pre-make the dough! I made my crust the day before the rest of the pie and kept in the fridge until I was ready to bake.

For the filling:

  1. Skin, slice, and chop green apples into small pieces.

  2. In a bowl, use a large spoon to combine brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon.

  3. Add apples to mixture in bowl and thoroughly toss to coat!

*For a mushier apple filling, bake/sauté this mixture for a few minutes before adding it to the pie crust. For a slightly crunchier apple filling, do NOT bake beforehand. I did not bake & loved the texture mine had... but this is fully up to preference!

For the crumble topping:

  1. In a medium bowl, use a fork or fingers to mix all crumble ingredients together. Continue squishing to combine until the mixture forms a crumb-like consistency. Store in the refrigerator until ready to bake the pie.

For the glaze:

  1. Blend brown sugar in a standard blender for 1-2 minutes, or until it turns into a soft powder.

  2. Add the now-powdered brown sugar to a medium bowl, along with milk of choice and vanilla extract.

  3. Stir until well combined and adjust proportions as needed! Store in refrigerator until pie is finished baking.

Baking & assembly:

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.

  2. Roll out prepared and chilled pie crust onto a lightly floured surface. Flatten and shape into a thin, large circle.

  3. Place rolled pie crust directly into an un-greased 9-inch pie pan. Flatten crust against bottom and sides of pan. Use a fork to crimp the edges!

  4. Pile the prepared apple mixture into the pan, spreading it out evenly over the crust.

  5. Evenly sprinkle the pie with prepared crumble topping.

  6. Bake the assembled pie for 20-25 minutes, until the top and edges are golden brown.

  7. Next, cover the entire top/crust with aluminum foil and continue baking for an additional 25 minutes.

  8. Once finished, remove from the oven and let cool for ~1 hour. Once cool, top with glaze, serve, and enjoy!
